The Snow Queen in a Blizzard Painting by Tiago Azevedo
The Snow Queen is an original fairy tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The tale was first published in 1844 and the story centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and her friend, Kai.
In this pop surrealist painting, the idea is to portray her
as being the snow itself, as if there is no separation between her and the
matter she controls. Shee looks surprised to be captured for she is in a
private moment, Her naked body contrasts with the cold snow around her and the
light blue background. Icicles are growing right out of her head forming a
crown, this shows that she can create anything out of snow and that snow is the
only matter she needs. The simplicity of the scene is intended to highlight her
beauty above all.
The story is one of Andersen's longest and most highly acclaimed stories. It is
regularly included in selected tales and collections of his work and is
frequently reprinted in illustrated storybook editions for children.
